About Me
I am Mayank, and I try to create scientifically accurate illustrations and write stories about underappreciated corners of science (currently physics and mathematical sciences). By underappreciated, I mean the less-popular ones that don’t make the headlines, such as statistical physics, biophysics, condensed matter physics, and other quiet frontiers.
I spent around a decade in academia in different capacities — five years as an undergraduate (BS-MS) in a research institute (IISER Kolkata, India) and then five years as a PhD student (Queen Mary University of London, UK), learning how to do research in theoretical sciences. Academically, I am a physicist by training, but I mostly worked on the theoretical physics-applied mathematics interface, so calling myself a physicist feels wrong.
A NOTE ON SCIENCE ILLUSTRATIONS
Science often benefits from good illustration and design choices and the end goal is to communicate findings. I strongly believe that aesthetically appealing illustrations and scientific rigour are not antithetical to each other. Guided by this philosophy, I strive to bring the mental imagery of researchers to life on screen using my creative skills. Acting as a bridge between academics and illustrators, I create conceptual schematics that are scientifically accurate and often do not exist in literature. I have collaborated with senior academics, tenured faculties and postdoc fellows to create custom graphics for grant proposals, academic journals, websites and books.
